RUMFORD — The Board of Selectmen voted to approve a $2,500 initiated article request from the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition during Monday evening’s public hearing at the Rumford Falls Auditorium.

Executive Director Patricia Duguay told the selectmen that the coalition employed six full-time employees, three part-time employees and offered internships.

Duguay added that one of the projects on the horizon for the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition will be attempting to construct a new footbridge over Swift River. The bridge would be located about a half-mile north of the Route 2 bridge over Swift River.

Duguay said that there used to be a bridge over Swift River that connected Mexico and Rumford, but it was washed away by a flood “decades ago.”

She added that residents from the River Valley area were planning on pursuing a grant that the Maine Recreational Trails Program offers through the Bureau of Parks and Lands, and that meetings would be held throughout 2015 so community members and organizations could voice their opinions on the project.

Among the other initiated article requests that the Board of Selectmen voted to place on the June 9 ballot were:

* $750 for Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services

* $1,200 for Rumford Group Homes

* $1,168 for Western Maine Transportation

* $3,000 for Community Concepts

The Board of Selectmen will meet again at 6 p.m. Monday, March 23, for a public hearing and to vote on the rest of the initiated articles, including requests from the Greater Rumford Community Center, Black Mountain of Maine, the River Valley Chamber of Commerce and Rumford Senior Citizens.
