PARIS — A Rumford man who tried to rob a man he kidnapped at knifepoint last year was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday.

Randall J. Chapman, 37, pleaded guilty to felony counts of kidnapping, robbery and aggravated assault in Oxford County Superior Court. He was sentenced to 12 years on the first two counts, and another four years to run simultaneously on the third. All but five years were suspended, and he was given four years of probation.

According to a police affidavit, a woman lured the victim into the apartment Chapman shared with his girlfriend, then 25-year-old Amber Cyr, with the promise of buying drugs in May 2014. The victim went downstairs, where he was jumped, robbed of $160 in cash, forced into a vehicle and ordered to drive to a remote ATM.

En route, the victim saw two police cruisers parked at a convenience store and tried to get the officers’ attention by pulling into the parking lot. The victim told them that Chapman slashed his face with the knife and fled toward the Androscoggin River, according to a police affidavit.

Chapman was eventually arrested by Maine State Police without incident in Gray about a week later.
