DURHAM — Recent cold weather is to blame for a big mess at a veterans’ hall in Durham.
Two weeks ago, pipes burst inside the AMVETS Post 13 Hall located on Route 136. From flags to floor tiles, most of what’s inside the building is currently ruined.
Because of water damage, no events can be held in the hall right now, which is the main way the post raises money. Members say the post budget is already tight to begin with and without help in a few months, the doors may close for good.
“You almost feel defeated because your hands are tied,” post commander Chad Burke told CBS 13. “When you don’t have the money to put into the facilities, you don’t have the manpower nor the skills to make it all happen all by yourself, it almost feels that you’re running against the wind.”
The hall is used for many community events. The post needs individuals and organizations to lend a helping hand.
