Question #2. This lady also wears “rain bonnets” on her head when it rains or snows. Where can she find these?

You are a blessing and hope you can find answers for us. — Judy B. in Lewiston.

ANSWER: Sun Spots called many local stores and pharmacies to see what is available in the Lewiston-Auburn area. To answer your first question, Bedard’s Pharmacy, which has locations in Lewiston (207-786-0138) and in Auburn (207-783-1410), carries scarves and kerchiefs.

In answer to the second part of your question, Wal-mart in Auburn (207-784-0738) carries rain bonnets. L.L. Bean in Freeport carries rain hats, but not rain bonnets.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am interested in obtaining copies of sections of several of your editions from early March 1957. The articles involve the Edward Little High School basketball team’s successful Western Maine Tournament victory and subsequent loss to Old Town High School in the state basketball championship game. Is it possible to arrange this request? — E.W. via email.

ANSWER: You need to supply a specific date or dates when you place your order with Sun Journal customer service staff at 207-784-5411. The cost is $20 per page and must be paid at the time of placing the order. The pages are printed on high-quality glossy stock.

If you are looking for an economical solution and don’t need glossy prints, Sun Spots called both the Auburn (207-333-6640) and Lewiston (207-513-3004) public libraries and learned that both have microfilm machines which you can use and print copies from as you like. These copies are printed on regular paper; 10 cents per page at the Auburn library and 20 cents per page at the Lewiston library.

The Lewiston reference librarian also stated that when using its microfilm machine you have options in addition to printing on paper. You may scan a microfilm page and save it as a PDF file to send via email or on a flash drive.

Many readers who look up old newspaper stories from the Sun Journal, the Daily Sun and Evening Journal on the microfilm news archive that Google provides have discovered that they cannot print out those stories using the usual “print key” method.

There are a couple ways around this. Start with the “print screen” key (it’s at the top of your keyboard; if it’s on the top with a line under it, you will also need to hit the shift key at the same time). Then paste what has been saved into Microsoft Paint or other image processing program. This process will present exactly what’s on the screen, ads and all, but you can use the program’s functions to erase the extras, leaving what you want, and then print.

Some computers also have a “grab” function. In some systems it might also be called a “snipping tool.” Whether this is available on your computer will depend on whether you are using a Macintosh or what version of Windows your computer is running.

The grabbing/snipping tool does enable you to grab what’s on the screen, but if the entire article won’t fit on the screen, you’d have to try and grab it in pieces and then “paste” them together in another program that will allow you to compile and manipulate what appears on the screen.
