LEWISTON — Scarborough’s Cinderella postseason run continues.
After taking out top-seeded Falmouth in the Western A semifinals on Saturday, the fourth-seeded Red Storm toppled No. 2 seed Cheverus, 5-2, in the regional final on Tuesday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. It’s Scarborough’s first Western A title.
“I wasn’t expecting this,” Scarborough coach Norm Gagne said. “We’re playing with house money right now and for us to be here, these kids I can’t say enough about the way they battle. They get out there and they get after it.”
Scarborough (13-5-3) will play the winner of the Eastern A final between St. Dominic Academy and Lewiston in the state championship on Saturday.
In two regular season meetings, neither team scored more than a goal, whether it was in 45 minutes of regulation or with an extra eight minutes of overtime. Scarborough’s Matt Caron scored twice in the first 9:42 of the contest Tuesday. Both came on the power play.
Caron netted his first at 4:01 of the opening period and with one second remaining on a cross-checking penalty on Cheverus’ James Hannigan. Caron swatted in a bouncing puck in front of the net past goaltender Kyle Severance. Scarborough’s Sean McGovern had the initial shot that led to the loose puck in front.
It was Caron from McGovern on the power play again for the Red Storm’s second goal. McGovern fed a pass to Caron in the slot and the junior forward lifted a shot over Severance for a 2-0 lead after one period.
“In the beginning of the game we came out focused,” Caron said. “We were getting pucks below the goal line, set up our forecheck and we were getting a high guy in the slot all game. We got so many shots in the slot.”
The Red Storm added to their advantage at 2:55 of the second period. Colin Hayward blasted a shot from the blue line through traffic, beating Severance stick side.
The Stags (13-6-2) made it a game, scoring two unanswered to close the second period. Less than a minute after coming out of the box for the second time, Hannigan sniped a shot from the left circle that deflected off the near post and past Scarborough goaltender Ben Bragg to make it 3-1.
James Kane’s goal at 11:26 pulled Cheverus within one. From behind the Red Storm net, Kane threw a puck in front that deflected off a Scarborough defender’s skate and snuck past Bragg.
“We had a couple chances to make it 4-0, but unfortunately their goalie made a couple of good saves and we really could have put it away,” Caron said. “But they came back, fought hard and got a couple goals, but in the end it was just really our goalie that made the difference.”
During Cheverus’ comeback attempt, they Red Storm remained poised.
“Under adversity they’ve learned to fight back,” Gagne said. “That’s big in playoffs. A lot of time when you get goals scored on you like they came right back after being down three, you can really get deflated, but the leader Sean McGovern, he’s our vocal man in the locker room and he gets them going.”
Bragg came up big in the third period, making 10 saves to keep the Red Storm in front. He made a pair of point-blank saves mid way through the frame and finished with 25 stops.
“He came up big when he’s needed to and he’s done that all year,” Gagne said. “Ben has been rock solid for us. I’ve said he’s got to be the best goalie in the state right now. He came up big. We wouldn’t be here without him.”
The Stags thought they had scored the equalizer with 4:56 left in regulation when Chris Vallee’s shot found the netting, but the refs ruled the net had come off its moorings. The play was reviewed and upheld, the second such review that went in favor of the Red Storm in as many games at the Colisee.
McGovern and Cam Nigro each buried empty-netters in the final minute to seal Scarborough’s place in the state title game.
Severance finished with 17 saves.
