RUMFORD — A Rumford woman was taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital on Saturday after her snowmobile struck a tree in Roxbury, Warden Josh Smith said Monday morning.
Smith said Kathryn Gagnon, 53, of Rumford was driving her snowmobile in the area of Bunker Pond Trail when she missed a left turn and hit a tree.
“When she hit the tree, she didn’t stay on the snowmobile,” Smith said. “She either jumped from the snowmobile or was thrown from it.”
There was some confusion on where the accident took place after Gagnon called for help, Smith said.
“The closest landmark that she could think of was Coos Canyon in Byron,” Smith said. “When we were dispatched, we started going that way, but the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office found her first. It turns out that she was in Roxbury.”
Smith said that Mexico and Rumford fire departments and Med-Care responded and were on scene to assist.
“She wasn’t too far into the woods,” Smith said. “We had to unload our snowmobiles and the rescue sled to help her out.”
Gagnon complained of general pain and was taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital.
“The last I heard, she was doing OK,” Smith said. “She’s lucky that it was a relatively minor accident compared to some of the accidents we’ve seen this year. I’m sure she didn’t think it was minor, but from our perspective, it could’ve been worse.”
