LEWISTON — One of the men captured inside a Cottage Street home Thursday night was wanted as a fugitive out of New York on a charge of manslaughter.
Lewiston police said they used extra caution Thursday night when they went to arrest 36-year-old Shane Hardy of Medford, on a warrant charging him with a parole violation.
Hardy was arrested shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, but only after police used a dog, mobile bunkers and chemical spray after he attempted to hide in the attic at 134 Cottage St.
Once he was captured, Hardy was charged in a New York warrant with being a fugitive from justice and trafficking in scheduled drugs, along with a local warrant charging him with a probation violation.
Police said they also arrested Thomas Hunter, 35, of East Elmhurst, N.Y., who was found hiding on the upper floors of the Cottage Street home. Hunter was charged with refusing to submit to arrest.
Both men remained at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on Friday.
The drama on Cottage Street began shortly before 8 p.m. when two men refused to come to the door when police went there to arrest Hardy.
For nearly an hour, police kept the home at 134 Cottage St. surrounded, ultimately sending a dog into the building after the men refused to come out. When that failed to convince the men to submit, police went in with hand-held bunkers and arrested the men.
Details about Hardy’s New York manslaughter case were not available Friday night.
