LEWISTON — Spring IS coming and it will be celebrated at the women’s center with a potluck supper and singing circle on Friday, March 20. The evening begins at 5. Please bring a contribution to the meal.
On Saturday, March 21, the center also will host a Quiet Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a time for silent reflection led by Klara Tammany. She will offer some inspirational readings on the transition to spring. A simple lunch is provided for those who sign up ahead of time. There is no charge for either program, though donations are appreciated.
Paul Drowns from the Nutrition Center comes on the 24th at noon for the Peasant Pantry Prep group. Participants prepare a simple, one dish meal that is then served to the wider community on Thursday, March 26. Serving time that day is between 11:30 and 1:30, and reservations are appreciated. There is no charge for the meal although donations are invited. The income is split between the team members who prepared the meal.
Other kitchen programs in March include a pancake breakfast for What’s Cookin’ on March 4 at 10 a.m. On March 5 at 10 a.m., attendees will learn about the Jewish festival of Purim, and then bake Purim cookies that afternoon which participants can take home. On the 11th, learn to make cocoa balls – a special treat that is like a truffle, but made with really healthy ingredients and not much sugar. Learn to make Irish soda bread at noon on March 16. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, starting with tea and soda bread, followed by games, blessings, riddles and crafts. Bring ideas.
Nursing student interns from USM/LAC are at the center every Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. On March 12 they will offer a spa day. Learn about simple ways to stay healthy and in good shape. There will be give-away prizes, too.
The Book Club will meet at 12:30 Monday, March 23, with Ann Auer leading discussion. The new book is “You Can Heal Your Life: The Power Within” by Louise Hay. A few library copies of the book are available at the center.
The monthly Playing with Poetry class is scheduled for 10 a.m. on March 24. This group time includes gently experiencing poems through both reading and writing. The weekly Writing Workshop with Pat Gardiner continues each Monday morning at 10.
Regular end of month activities include bingo on the 31st at 10 a.m. and the monthly women’s clothing give-away all day on the 19th. The Art Van visits at 10 a.m. March 25, followed by the March birthday party at noon.
A Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Group meets weekly on Mondays, 3 to 4:30 p.m. It is run by Health Affiliates. If you are interested, call Trena Jackson at 333-3278. The group will add new members at intervals between units.
The center hopes soon to start a Women for Sobriety group. Call if you are interested.
A weekly Al-Anon group, the only one in Lewiston, meets on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. The BLT group for bisexual, lesbian and transgendered women and their friends or family will meet at 2 p.m. March 26.
The center is continually in need of donations of hygiene items to give away. Needed are full-size, unopened, basic items such as shampoo and conditioner, tampons and pads, deodorant and toothpaste/brushes. Unopened smaller sample sizes can be used for outreach packs. Because the center has requests from over 70 individual women each month, the regular ongoing contribution of these supplies is very much appreciated.
The center’s hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. The winter policy is that if schools close for snow, the center is also closed. For a full calendar of events see www.wisdomswomen.org. All women are welcome, programs are offered free of charge and no appointments are needed. Oatmeal breakfasts are available daily and the center has a shower available for use.
If you have questions, or are interested in volunteering, contact the executive director, Klara Tammany, at 513-3922. Donations can be written to Trinity Church/Wisdom and sent to The Center for Wisdom’s Women at PO Box 1016, Lewiston 04243. Trinity serves as a supporting partner and fiscal agent for The Center.
