RUMFORD — Officers with the Rumford Police and Fire departments responded to the report of a suicide on Memorial Bridge on Sunday morning.

Rumford Sgt. Tracey Higley said the Police Department, along with the Maine Warden Service, Rumford Fire Department and Med-Care Ambulance, were dispatched to Memorial Bridge after receiving a call about a suicide.

“We really can’t share anything more than that,” Higley said. “All I can say is that we received the call about a suicide on Sunday, and that we, along with the Maine Warden Service, Rumford Fire and Med-Care responded. That’s all I’m going to share.”

On Sunday morning, the Rumford Police Department posted on its Facebook page that residents should avoid the area of Memorial Bridge and that it was closed off.

“If you do not need to be downtown, avoid it,” the Facebook post read. “If you have to go downtown, don’t linger. Please give all first responders time and space to deal with the incident they are dealing with.”

A little more than an hour later, the Rumford Police Department reported via their Facebook page that the area around Memorial Bridge had be reopened, and encouraged residents to “be responsible and respectful of others” by “keeping rumors offline.”
