RUMFORD — A Hallowell woman was injured when a car struck the passenger side of the vehicle she was riding in Friday afternoon on Route 2, police said.
Deborah Wier, 62, of Hallowell, complained of shoulder pain, Rumford police Sgt. James Bernard said. She was riding in the front seat of a 2008 Toyota RAV4 driven west by Pamela Wier, 61, of Hallowell, he said.
Bernard said Wier slowed and signaled to turn right into the River Valley Crossing Shopping Center entrance when she saw a car approaching from behind at a high rate of speed. Fearing she was about to get rear-ended, she continued on Route 2 and her SUV was broadsided by a 2005 Subaru Forester operated by Oressa Farnum, 27, of Bryant Pond, who was leaving the shopping center, Bernard said. Neither Farnum nor her 6-year-old daughter, Natalie, were injured.
Bernard said one driver failed to yield and the other failed to make a proper turn, but neither was charged.
The third driver may not have realized the other two cars collided, he added.
Air bags in the Toyota deployed, but not in the Subaru.
Rumford firefighters assisted Bernard and Rumford police Cpl. Donald Miller by directing traffic and helping get accident victims into warm vehicles since wind chills were 30- to 40-degrees-below zero and there was blowing snow.
Brad Adley, owner of Adley’s Auto Sales & Service Center on Route 2, hauled away the vehicles.
