AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine lawmakers will consider measures this session to place new regulations on electronic cigarettes.

House Democratic Leader Jeff McCabe is proposing to put restrictions on where e-cigarettes can be used.

He told the Maine Public Broadcasting Network that the state should be treating e-cigarettes as a tobacco product because they similarly include things that can be harmful to a person’s health.

Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew said she also supports examining new regulations for the devices and the products that are being vaporized in them.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Janet Mills said she’s concerned that marketing for the products is targeting young adults.

E-cigarettes are smokeless devices that provide a vaporized blend of chemicals found in traditional cigarettes, like nicotine.
