NORTH TURNER — Barbara L. Hammond, 78, of North Turner, passed away peacefully at her home the morning of Friday, Jan. 30, after a long illness.
She was born Jan. 23, 1937, the daughter and only child of Marion (Brochu) and Maynard Bessey. She grew up in South Paris. She enjoyed many interests in her youth while also helping out with the family business, Bessey Foods. After graduating from Paris High School, she attended and graduated from Westbrook College in Portland.
She married Carlton (Bill) Hammond on April 21, 1957. They were married for 58 years. They originally lived and worked in the Buckfield area and later moved to Portland. In 1977, they moved to North Turner.
Barbara will be remembered as a very outgoing, warm and friendly person. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was always very involved in her children’s activities.
She operated and assisted in many business ventures throughout her life, most notably CN Turner Co. and Brettuns Dairy Bar. She thoroughly enjoyed the social interaction with the customers.
She was an avid snowmobiler in her day. She was very involved in her genealogy (Bessey/Besse) and organized many family reunions. She took great pride in her family history and loved talking with all of her relatives from around the state and country. Barbara was very artistic and enjoyed painting. She was fond of all animals, leaving behind her beloved cats, Patty and Spike.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Bill of North Turner; her three children, Reggie and his wife, Janet, from Rangeley, Stacy Cobb and husband, Derek, from Wayne, and Darcy Moreau from Florida; and eight grandchildren, Luke and Allison Hammond, Mitchell, Bryce and Gavin Cobb and Dylan, Hannah and Lindsey Griswold. She was also close to her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Barry and Ann Hammond of Livermore as well as Dale Bessey from Livermore Falls. She had great love for her family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice, especially Tammy and Gretchen for their compassion and care for Barbara, the office of Dr. Erickson and the nurses at the Fusion Center at CMMC for their wonderful care and company.
