PORTLAND (AP) — University of Southern Maine officials are set to announce the finalists for its next president.

University of Maine system trustee Jim Irwin says 80 people applied to be the president of the university, which has nearly 10,000 students and campuses in Gorham, Portland and Lewiston. The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/15LvUb5 ) reported Irwin says the finalists will be announced Tuesday.

University of Southern Maine officials named former Central Maine Power chief David Flanagan as interim president in July. He took over after interim President Theodora Kalikow’s stepped down.

The university has grappled with financial problems and layoffs in recent months. It is second-largest university in the state system.
