AUBURN — The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine Auburn/Lewiston Clubhouse will hold its inaugural Basketball Battle at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Auburn Recreation Department’s Hasty Center at Pettingill Park.
The clubhouse has two high school travel basketball teams that compete in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine High School League. This competitive league is part of a long-standing partnership between the clubs and recreation departments from Portland and South Portland and includes 14 teams from throughout Portland and South Portland, as well as Lewiston/Auburn, which joined the league last year.
The program here in the Twin Cities is called Be Great Basketball and players start more than one month in advance of the season and sign contracts with the clubhouse that include everything from passing grades that are monitored twice-weekly to serving as club mentors and role models (on and off the court) to community service, college tours and career exploration, and fundraising for causes as well as their team fees.
This game will be between the two clubhouse teams, which are comprised of 23 members between the two.
