“Return of the Maine Bones: Mark Manduca and Friends” is at 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 30, in Corthell Concert Hall, USM Gorham campus.
The Maine Bones was founded in 1989 by Scott Reeves, associate professor of jazz history and performance at The City College of New York, who was a USM School of Music faculty member at the time. The original group featured a trombone section of Reeves, Manduca, Tim Sessions, and Maine jazz great Don Doane. The rhythm section included Janet Reeves, piano; Jim Lyden, bass; and Les Harris Jr., USM artist faculty in percussion, on drums. The group performed regularly at local jazz venues and regional festivals.
“This will be the second revival concert for the group,” said Manduca. “Five of the original members will be playing. We hope it will be a springboard to continued activity!”
The original returning members include Scott Reeves and Manduca on trombone, with Janet Reeves, Lyden, and Harris playing rhythm.
Christopher Oberholtzer, USM professor of music and director of jazz studies, and Thomas Michaud, local musician and member of the Portland Jazz Orchestra, will join the trombone section to round out the group.
The Maine Bones reunion concert will feature a combination of jazz standards and original works. Standards include “Caravan,” “Emily,” “Undecided,” and “Round Midnight.” Arrangements include “Pavane” by Gabriel Faure, “Hum” by Bob Brookmeyer, and “T.D.’s Dilemma,” which is based on Tommy Dorsey’s “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You.” They also will perform original works by Scott Reeves including “Knepper,” and “Where Flamingos Fly.”
Tickets $15, general public; $10, seniors, USM employees and alumni; $5, students. Go to http://usm.maine.edu/music/boxoffice or call 207-780-5555.
