NORWAY — The first biathlon of the season at Roberts Farm Preserve will be held Sunday, Jan. 18.
Lee Dassler of the Western Foothills Land Trust said two race distances are offered — 3x1k and 3x2k. Air rifles are provided. Skis (classic only), boots and poles may also be provided on site. There is a $10 registration fee, $5 for any members of the Oxford Hills Middle School Viking team or the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School Nordic team.
Dassler said the sport of biathlon involves three skiing laps interspersed with two five-shot target sessions. Both skiing and target techniques are supported and endurance and accuracy are rewarded.
Registration and air-rifle target practice will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. The 3x1k and 3x2k races will start at 11 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow the races.
The Western Foothills Land Trust is always looking for volunteers to help with timing and at the target area. For more information, contact Dassler at the trust at 207-739-2124.
