GRAY (AP) — A group of high school students in Gray are in the running to win $20,000 for Gray-New Gloucester High School for designing a smartphone application that helps users track their health and fitness.

The students designed their “Fit Food 4 Kids+” app as part of Verizon’s “Innovative App Challenge,” which attracted almost 2,000 entries from around the country. Their design was chosen as the best in the state and is in the running to be one of eight national winners.

The app allows users to track fitness, nutrition and sleep, and provides tips on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

The contest also includes a competition category for middle school students. Maine’s winner is a group of Rockland middle school students who designed an app called “Lunch Helper Plus.”
