LISBON — Little went right for the Wiscasset girls through most of three quarters Tuesday. The Greyhounds led from the start, taking an early eight-point lead, and Lisbon still led by three with three seconds left in the third quarter.
That’s when Wiscasset coach Patrick Quinn took a chance. He reinserted forward Alecia Faulkingham with four fouls, with his team needing to go the length of the court to score.
The move paid off, as Faulkingham tipped a no-look pass to Miranda McIntire, who finished, and the momentum led to the Wolverines coming all the way back for a 38-35 win at Manchester Gymnasium.
“I had a weird feeling about putting Alecia into the game, and she recognized that the defense came up and we went over the top to Miranda, not a play Miranda practices very often,” Quinn said.
In the fourth quarter, Wiscasset took its first lead since an opening possession 2-0 edge, and extended out to a five-point advantage, 36-31, when Kayla Gordon finished off a game-high 14-point effort.
McIntire felt the late third-quarter basket gave her team the lift that it needed.
“It was a little bit lucky, and I didn’t even look at the basket and it went in for my first points of the game,” said McIntire, who had four points and eight rebounds. “It felt good, being down by just one, and once we got up in the fourth quarter we knew we were going to win the game.”
“We knew that we needed to take care of business and continue to play defense, but in the second half we didn’t rotate correctly at times, plus we went stagnant in the fourth quarter,” Lisbon coach Julie Petrie said. “We are right there. We just need to learn how to finish a game.”
All Lisbon
The Greyhounds were paced by the strong play of Mia Durgin and Jasmine Le in the opening quarter. Lisbon used an 11-1 run for an 11-3 lead after eight minutes, with Durgin scoring five points and Le picking up four.
Wiscasset shot itself in the foot, missing several lay-ups and open looks. The Wolverines shot just 20 percent (4-of-20) in the half and managed a paltry 11 points.
After its strong first quarter, Lisbon went cold in the second, making just 2-of-12 shots. Still, the Greyhounds held a 15-11 lead at the half.
Both teams found an offensive flow in the third quarter, combining for 31 points. Kaylin Le was the catalyst for Lisbon, scoring four points and dishing our three assists, with Durgin and Mikayla Yanez adding four points apiece. Gordon had six points in the quarter for Wiscasset, while Colleen Hendricks picked up five.
In the fourth, Wiscasset claimed the lead, with McIntire scoring again from Gordon, who followed with a bucket for a 32-29 Wolverines lead.
Kaylin Le made a pair at the free-throw line, but Hendricks and Gordon scored for a 36-31 edge for the visitors with 3:31 left. Lisbon clawed within three on two occasions, but failed to get a good look at a late tie.
“We just played harder in the second half,” Quinn said. “They played way harder than we did in the first half. This gym has a way of sucking the life out of you. It always happens, and we always talk about it. So, I am glad that we were able to get through and get a win.”
Hendricks finished with 11 points, while Gordon pulled down seven rebounds.
Jasmine Le had 10 points, Durgin nine, Kaylin Le eight and Yanez six for the Greyhounds. Kaylin Le picked up seven boards, dished out four assists and had four steals.
