DIXFIELD — Longtime assistant superintendent and curriculum coordinator Gloria Jenkins submitted her resignation to the Regional School Unit 10 board Monday night, effective at the end of the current school year. She is retiring from her position.

Jenkins began her position as curriculum, instruction and assessment coordinator in 1999 with the former School Administrative District 43 district. When former SADs 43, 21 and 39 combined four years ago, she became assistant superintendent, as well.

She said the time has come for her to do something else. She has served in education for nearly 43 years.

During her tenure at RSU 10, she has not only dealt with the changes that came with the combination of the three former districts into one regional school district, but has also led the way for new educational initiatives, including customized learning and standards-based education and graduation.

Superintendent Craig King said on Friday that the board’s Personnel Committee soon will further define the position and then begin the advertising and hiring process.

One of the changes in the position for her replacement adds the duties of overseer of all personnel policies, hiring and managing staff who take family leave or are absent for other reasons.

King said plans are to have a new person in place by the beginning of the fiscal year on July 1.

The board’s ad hoc committee for the proposed withdrawal of the town of Byron from the district was authorized to meet with the Byron Withdrawal Committee to discuss an agreement that could lead to the small town leaving the district.

Currently, Byron sends nine students to RSU 10 schools.

Some in Byron have said that standing on their own would mean lower educational costs for the town.

In other matters, Rangeley resident Sarah Lambert was hired as a new first-grade teacher at Rumford Elementary School.

Other new hires include Deborah Murphy, Meroby Elementary School secretary; and Jacqueline Mikkonen, Dirigo Elementary School after-school site coordinator.

Other resignations include Kevin Prevost, DES special education educational technician; Kim Russell, Pennacook Learning Center educational technician; and Clint Dolloff, Dirigo regional custodian.
