WARREN — A Waldoboro woman was charged following a head-on car crash on Route 1 Sunday morning.
According to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll, a 2005 Pontiac sedan driven by Jillian Richards, 24, of Waldoboro was driving south on Route 1 just south of the intersection of Route 90 around 6:30 a.m. when she reportedly fell asleep and veered into the oncoming lane. Her vehicle struck head-on a 2005 GMC truck being operated by John Engwer, 53, of Wrentham, Massachusetts.
Richards was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated. She was transported to a central Maine hospital by a LifeFlight helicopter with non-life-threatening injuries, Carroll said. Engwer was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport by ambulance for complaint of pain.
There were no other passengers in either vehicle.
Richards was charged later Sunday morning with operating under the influence, driving to endanger and failure to have insurance, Carroll said. The chief deputy said the woman said she was returning from the methadone clinic and does not recall what happened.
Deputy John Hansen is investigating with assistance from deputy Paul Spear and Sgt. Tim Hoppe of the Thomaston Police Department.
Warren’s fire and ambulance service responded along with Waldoboro’s ambulance service to the crash.
