TURNER — Four people were hurt early Friday night when cars collided head on at the intersection of Route 4 and County Road.

Police said Paul Bouchard, 33, of Livermore, was pulling onto Route 4 from Old County Road at about 5:45 p.m. when his car collided with another driven by Carly McBreairty, 21, of Turner, who was headed south on Route 4.

McBreairty had been traveling with two passengers, a 15-year-old girl and an infant, police said. Those three were taken to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center to be examined for pain and possible injuries.

Bouchard, who had been driving alone, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston to be examined for possible injury.

None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to have contributed to the crash, which remained under investigation late Friday night.

With commuter traffic at its heaviest and sections of Route 4 getting slick due to dropping temperatures, traffic slowed to a crawl on either side of the crash site for an hour after the wreck.

Police blocked off both lanes of travel, detouring traffic down side roads, including Potato Road on one end and County Road on the other.

Several motorists stuck in traffic on Route 4 opted to turn around rather than wait for the wreck to be cleared. Other drivers sought their own detours — traffic was heavy going onto Lower Street while other drivers were trying to exit from the same intersection.

With traffic moving in all directions and ambulances making their way toward Lewiston, several near-collisions occurred while the crash site was being cleared.

Police continued to direct traffic around the site while debris was cleared from the roadway and wreckers moved in to haul away the involved vehicles. By 6:45 p.m., police at the scene radioed in to report that the wreckers had completed their work and that the road would be reopened.

The crash is being investigated by Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy Martin Fournier. Turner Fire and Rescue assisted at the crash scene.
