FARMINGTON — After nearly 20 years building Shiretown Insurance in downtown Farmington, Scott Landry finished 2014 by retiring Wednesday.

The company has merged with United Insurance Group of Falmouth, Landry said.

It will be known as United Insurance Group Shiretown. Landry’s son, Seth, of Vienna, will be the vice president and manager.

“It is time,” Landry said of retirement as he patted his dog, Ginger, who comes to work with him.

Scott Landry has a home to finish building. He will also have more time for gardening, photography and his grandchildren. These activities are in addition to the boards he serves on for several nonprofit agencies.

Landry is retired, but his insurance work is not finished. He will continue as a consultant with the business for two years and maintain some of his accounts, Seth Landry said.

Seth Landry has worked at Shiretown for 15 years after studying business at the University of Maine at Farmington.

“I have some big shoes to fill,” he said.

Scott Landry established the business in 1995, Seth said.

Prior to starting Shiretown, Scott Landry worked with Prudential for 18 years developing a background in life and health insurance. Apart from the company, he will continue some of that through Modern Woodmen, his son said.

Scott Landry will also continue his interest in photography.

“I used to do it professionally, photographing a lot of weddings,” he said. “Now I do it as a hobby. I like to document things that happen around here.”

As for customers, nothing will change, Seth Landry said of the merger. “It will be business as usual. The employees will continue providing insurance needs.”

As part of the United Insurance Group, one of 17 around the state, the company will have more products available through the larger market, he said.
