CHESTERVILLE — Police said a local man is charged with firing a pistol, assaulting a family member, threatening state troopers and attempting to spit blood on them.

Dillan Burnham, 22, was arrested Monday on charges of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, domestic violence assault and refusing to submit to arrest or detention, Maine State Police Sgt. Matt Casavant said.

Police were called to a Chesterville home for a despondent male who had fired several shots from a pistol outside the house, Casavant said. Burnham had threatened to harm himself during a phone conversation with a family member. The relative heard the gunshots and called for help, Casavant said.

Before state police arrived, Burnham went into the home and got into a physical fight with a family member, Casavant said. Burnham’s pistol slid across the floor and was under a table during the fight, he said.

The troopers forced their way into the home to help and saw Burnham was being restrained by a family member, Casavant said.

Burnham was taken into custody by the troopers, and screamed threats and yelled so so much, he was bleeding from his mouth, Casavant said. He tried to spit blood on the troopers, Casavant said.

Burnham was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital for an evaluation. While he was there, he bit a security guard and had to be restrained, Casavant said.

After being cleared by medical personnel, Burnham was taken to Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington, where he remained Wednesday morning, according to a jail officer.
