WINDHAM — Students were sent home early from Windham schools Monday morning after district officials say a “threat” was made.

Cindy Kennie — executive assistant to the superintendent of Regional School Unit 14, which includes Windham and Raymond — said the district began dismissing students from all schools in Windham at around 9:15 a.m. Monday.

“We had a threat,” Kennie told the Bangor Daily News. “As a precautionary measure, we had a lockdown first, then sent the students home for the day.”

Lt. Jim Boudreau of the Windham Police Department said two different RSU 14 school officials received emails “of a threatening nature toward the school system” at the beginning of the school day Monday.

“The emails were not identical and were sent from two different sources,” Boudreau said in a statement issued late Monday morning. “The Windham police, with the help of the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force, initiated an investigation to attempt to determine the source of the emails. That investigation is ongoing at this time, and no additional information will be released until that investigation is concluded.”

Kennie said the district is not releasing any more information about the nature or placement of the threat, but will be notifying parents when the RSU gets more details from police.

Windham police confirmed that classes will not be in session Tuesday.
