PORTLAND (AP) — Three of Maine’s most popular big game hunting seasons are entering their final days for the year.

Saturday is the final day of the year to legally hunt bears and moose. It’s also the last day of Maine’s season for hunting deer with firearms. The deer hunting season also includes archery and muzzleloader seasons that extend into December.

This year’s bear hunt was contentious because of a November referendum that sought to eliminate hunters’ ability to use bait, dogs or traps to hunt bears. The referendum failed, and the methods remain legal. However, the portions of the season that include legal bait, dog and trap use are over for this year.

The remaining part of the moose hunt is limited to six wildlife management districts in southern and coastal Maine.
