FARMINGTON — Local bookstore Devaney, Doak & Garrett will host a special Chester Greenwood Day event Saturday, Dec. 6.
Nationally celebrated picture book author and illustrator Meghan McCarthy will come to Farmington to launch her new book, “Earmuffs for Everyone: How Chester Greenwood Became Known as the Inventor of Earmuffs.”
“Earmuffs for Everyone” is being released Dec. 6.
The day will begin with the Chester Greenwood Day Parade at 11 a.m. with McCarthy riding on the chamber of commerce float. The book signing will take place after the parade at the bookstore. She will also judge an earmuff coloring contest for which prizes will be given.
“Earmuffs for Everyone” explores not only the life and inventions of Chester Greenwood, but also the way in which some inventions, whose origins are in fact shared among several inventors, sometimes become popularly attributed to only one of them, according to a release from DD&G owner Kenny Brechner.
McCarthy’s book recounts how what started out as just a patent on a new variation in earmuffs by the young Greenwood ultimately led to him being credited as the sole inventor of the earmuff. That story is filled with Farmington history and lore, and is recounted by McCarthy.
McCarthy is the author/illustrator of “POP!: The Invention of Bubblegum” and “Daredevil: The Daring Life of Betty Skeleton.”
