OLD TOWN — A man whom police say attempted to break into a Bennoch Road home while naked from the waist down and under the influence of bath salts was arrested Tuesday after police received a strange string of reports.

The series of incidents that led to the arrest began shortly before 3 p.m., when Old Town police were called to a Bennoch Road home to investigate a report that a man was out of control and possibly on bath salts, Sgt Michael Hashey said Tuesday evening in a news release.

Other callers reported that the man was outside naked, throwing things at passing cars, Hashey said.

While police were traveling to the area, Penobscot Regional Communications Center dispatchers received another call from another woman who reported that a man had broken a window out of a door and was trying to get inside, Hashey said.

The woman, who believed that the man had gained entry into her home, fled out a second door and hid in the nearby woods, Hashey said.

Upon arrival, one of the officers encountered the man, who was naked from the waist down, the Old Town sergeant said.

“(The suspect) was acting erratically and police used a Taser while taking (him) into custody,” Hashey said. The man, however, continued to resist efforts to subdue him and had to be restrained, Hashey said.

Hashey said that the man was taken to an area hospital by an Old Town ambulance with police officers on board.

The homeowner was found uninjured in the woods, Hashey said. He said that while the man arrested by police apparently had broken the window, he had not yet made his way inside the home. Charges are pending, Hashey said.

Hashey said that Old Town police were assisted by members of the Orono and Veazie police departments as well as the Maine State Police.
