MARSHFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Christmas vacation is out in one Massachusetts school system, replaced by “holiday break.”

The Marshfield School Committee on Monday voted 3-2 to uphold a September decision to change the name of Christmas vacation to holiday break, despite protests from some residents of the coastal town south of Boston and a petition signed by about 4,000 people who wanted to keep the old name.

The Patriot Ledger of Quincy (http://bit.ly/1uAQuyQ ) reported that before the vote, dozens of residents spoke, including teachers, religious leaders, parents and high school students. Some said the change symbolizes the inclusiveness and diversity of the community.

Those who wanted to keep the name Christmas vacation said it’s built around the federal holiday of Christmas, which promotes a message of peace, whether or not one celebrates it.
