AUBURN — An excavator was heavily damaged after the trailer it was on rolled over Friday afternoon at a busy intersection, slowing traffic to a crawl.
Lt. Anthony Harrington said Leroy Edwards, 58, of Harrison was driving a tractor-trailer inbound on Minot Avenue to turn south onto Washington Street at a rotary “too fast for the curve.”
The load shifted and tipped over the trailer, which is owned by P & K Sand and Gravel of Naples. The excavator, which is owned by Rent It of Auburn, spilled roughly 50 gallons of diesel fuel onto the road. The vehicle may have been totaled, Harrington said.
Personnel from the Auburn Fire Department, Auburn Public Works and Maine Department of Environmental Protection used absorbent materials to contain the fuel. The cleanup slowed traffic for several hours.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Edwards was not injured.
Maine State Police inspected the tractor-trailer and determined there was no mechanical failure that contributed to the accident, Harrington said.
