With the city looking to purchase the downtown canals and some people wondering about kayaking on the canals, I have a suggestion.
We already have an Androscoggin River water access park just north of the water treatment plant on Lincoln Street. Directly south on the river is a natural “white water” river rips. If Lewiston could build a water access point near the public works garage on River Road, we could have a natural white water course that could be used over and over on days when the water levels and temperatures are right.
In addition, that would open the river for people to paddle the Androscoggin from Lewiston to Lisbon Falls (about 8 miles) avoiding any whitewater and needing only a 20-minute car drive to get from one end to the other.
Let’s develop what we already have.
