CHESTERVILLE — Quick-acting neighbors on Cross Street helped save a home Tuesday night after they noticed hay used to bank the house had caught fire.

John Firth’s neighbors saw the fire at about 6:21 p.m. and rushed to help pull the burning hay away from the building, Chesterville fire Chief Eddie Hastings IV said.

Sparks from a pellet stove had apparently blown out of the vent, landing on the hay, he said. Pellet stove vents are often placed 4 to 6 feet up on the side of a home, he said.

Little damage was done to the front of the house, although firefighters removed a 6- to 8-foot corner board to ensure the fire had not spread into the siding, he said.

Mutual aid from area departments was canceled once firefighters arrived at the scene. Farmington Fire and Rescue helped the Chesterville Fire Department, Hastings said.
