GREENWOOD — The Mt. Abram Ski Area has finished the installation of an 803-panel photovoltaic solar project that is expected to offset much of the resort’s annual electricity consumption, Marketing Director Jamie Schectman said Monday in a news release.
Schectman said residents and skiers are invited to celebrate the completion of the solar project at 11 a.m. Dec. 4 in the base area parking lot overlooking the project, followed by lunch and a view of the solar project’s monitor display.
The project, which has been in the works for four years, is expected to produce more than 280,000 kilowatt-hours per year and will “offset approximately 70 percent of the ski area’s annual electricity consumption,” Schectman said.
The project will be paid for partly by $235,000 from a 25 percent matching grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Energy for America Program. Payback is expected to take about four and a half years, Schectman said.
He said the total cost of the project would be no more than $940,000.
