PARIS — A judge has upheld bail conditions for a Bowdoinham man accused of assaulting and raping a woman this past summer in Hartford.

Christopher M. Jones, 39, of Fish Road faces charges stemming from a June 4 incident in which he is accused of duct-taping the victim’s hands together and raping her.

Jones is charged with gross sexual assault, aggravated assault, domestic violence and criminal threatening. The maximum penalty for the combined charges amounts to more than 45 years in prison and $75,000 in fines.

Jones pleaded not guilty to the charges at an arraignment hearing in Oxford County Superior Court on Tuesday. He will remain imprisoned at the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset while his case is pending.

Defense attorney Nicholas Worden said his client had no prior criminal history, complied with investigators and court dates and already had an active protection order out against him, ensuring barriers were in place to prevent contact with the victim. It was not clear why Maine Pretrial Services declined to supervise Jones, he said.

Active-Retired Justice Robert Clifford denied Worden’s request to amend bail conditions from $5,000 cash or $1,000 with an agreement supervising release through Maine Pretrial Services, to $1,000 cash. Worden told Clifford that his client was denied a contract with Maine Pretrial Services and could not pay the $5,000.

“I think it’s a bad sign Maine Pretrial won’t give him a contract,” Clifford said.

According to its website, Maine Pretrial Services is a private, nonprofit company providing supervision of defendants outside jail while their court cases pass through the judicial system. Jones has remained in prison since he was arrested June 6.

The defense has subpoenaed the Maine Department of Health and Human Services for the victim’s applications for various state benefits.
