LEWISTON — Shane Bouchard handily defeated Darcy Reed to claim the open City Council seat in Ward 4.
Bouchard said he knocked on as many doors as he could during the short campaign. That may have made the difference. He won 1,116 votes to Reed’s 856
“So I had people coming up to me at the polls that stopped by to talk to me,” Bouchard said. “Some just knew me from work. Some just recognized my name.”
Reed said that may be the case. Reed, a student seeking a law degree at the University of Maine School of Law, said she didn’t have as much time to campaign as she had wanted.
“I didn’t get the time to go knocking on doors,” Reed said. “That was my disadvantage. I didn’t have the time to do the doors, and for a City Council race, I think that’s really the most effective method of getting votes.”
Bouchard will replace Doreen Christ, who resigned effective Sept. 30 after she moved to Freeport. He will serve out the remainder of Christ’s term, which ends in 2015.
Christ announced her resignation in mid-September, giving candidates a month and a half to collect signatures, win a spot on the ballot and campaign.
Bouchard will be sworn in at a special ceremony Monday, Nov. 10, in the City Council chambers in Lewiston City Hall, 87 Pine St. Light refreshments will be served following the swearing-in ceremony.
