Would you support expanding the state’s Medicaid program, MaineCare? Why or why not?

Over the last dozen years or so, the state has expanded this program and it continues to get us into debt. I would not be in favor of any expansion of MaineCare until we can get control of what we currently have.

Should Maine follow the city of Portland’s lead and legalize the possession of limited amounts of marijuana for adults over the age of 21? Why or why not?

Maine voters have approved a medical marijuana program, and I would not be in favor at all of supporting legalization for recreational usage.

Should the state of Maine continue to provide incentives for businesses and homeowners to convert or diversify energy sources to those considered renewable, like solar, wind and geothermal?

Maine needs to continue to develop new energy sources. One reason new companies are not coming to Maine is high energy costs, but why should the taxpayers pay the price for new incentives?

Maine’s minimum wage is $7.50 an hour. As a state lawmaker would you support increasing that minimum wage? If so, what should Maine’s minimum wage be?

A living wage is, of course, ideal, but if the state wants to attract more businesses to this state it has to be very careful of this issue. It’s a delicate balance, particularly for small businesses. A number of employers already start at more than the minimum wage.

What issue is the most important to voters in your legislative district?

Jobs, taxes, affordable health care, welfare and having the state and federal governments work for the benefit of the people, not the parties or themselves.

What about you makes you the man or woman for the job?

I have lived here my whole life, I know the people and I have seen the consequences of the area’s economic struggles. During my 30-year career in law enforcement, I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly — the people are good, the economy bad, the consequences ugly.

I have been active in Paris by serving on its Planning Board for five years, and after that on the selectboard for three years. I served as both a regular member and chair on both boards. I also served on the AVCOG Executive Board.

My wife and I have an extensive garden including day lilies, annuals and vegetables. We regularly vacation both in the country and overseas. My regular activities include playing bridge with the Oxford Hill Bridge Club and Lewiston Bridge Club.

Would you support expanding the state’s Medicaid program, MaineCare? Why or why not?

Yes. Extending benefits to more than 70,000 Maine citizens makes economic sense and is the morally right decision. Denying access to medical care by failing to provide funding is indefensible.

Should Maine follow the city of Portland’s lead and legalize the possession of limited amounts of marijuana for adults over the age of 21? Why or why not?

Yes. Like alcohol and tobacco, marijuana should be legalized, regulated and taxed. Growers should be licensed so marijuana and hemp could become additional revenue sources for local farmers.

Should the state of Maine continue to provide incentives for businesses and homeowners to convert or diversify energy sources to those considered renewable, like solar, wind and geothermal?

Yes. A power grid that utilizes a variety of energy sources is not dependent on a single commodity that could be exploited. Using renewable energy sources will extend the availability of non-renewable sources like coal, oil and natural gas. In addition, many renewable sources cause less pollution.

An individual making minimum wage should be able to live on that wage and not have to be subsidized by the taxpayer. The $10.10 recommendation is a reasonable place to set the minimum.

What issue is the most important to voters in your legislative district?

Economic issues are on everyone’s mind. Two major elements are attracting business/industry with good paying jobs and property tax increases caused by the state’s shifting of the tax burden to municipalities.

What about you makes you the man or woman for the job?

I am a good listener and have more than 40 years of experience both working with and leading people. I anticipate change and work for results. I have practical experience developing ideas and moving them to action. As a representative I recognize my responsibility to be effective for my constituents.
