Would you support expanding the state’s Medicaid program, MaineCare? Why or why not?

I do not think Medicaid (MaineCare) should be expanded at this time. I believe we need to fix the system so that the truly needy are taken care of first, and examine why the Affordable Care Act (known as ObamaCare) is not working.

Should Maine follow the city of Portland’s lead and legalize the possession of limited amounts of marijuana for adults over the age of 21? Why or why not?

I believe this is a social issue and should be put out for a statewide vote. I am still investigating the issue in order to make an informed decision.

Should the state of Maine continue to provide incentives for businesses and homeowners to convert or diversify energy sources to those considered renewable, like solar, wind and geothermal?

If incentives are to be provided, the businesses and homeowners should not be limited to a type of energy source. They should be able to decide what is best for them to convert to.

Maine’s minimum wage is $7.50 an hour. As a state lawmaker would you support increasing that minimum wage? If so, what should Maine’s minimum wage be?

I support a graduated minimum wage increase from $7.50 to $10.50 over a six-  to 10-year time frame.

What issue is the most important to voters in your legislative district?

Voters in the downtown area rely on their benefits and want continued assistance, or in some cases, be able to receive benefits. The voters out of the downtown area want economic development, for  the war on welfare reform to continue, and to stop wasteful spending.

What about you makes you the man or woman for the job?

I have an open mind, good common sense and am willing to compromise. I seek out information, ask questions, and will always listen to your needs and concerns when making decisions that affect you. I care.

Would you support expanding the state’s Medicaid program, MaineCare? Why or why not?

I will support providing health care for 70,000 struggling Mainers, including nearly 3,000 veterans. Not only is it the right thing to do, but failure to expand health care costs Maine half a billion dollars each year that would support over 4,000 jobs, and save hospitals millions of dollars in uninsured care.

Should Maine follow the city of Portland’s lead and legalize the possession of limited amounts of marijuana for adults over the age of 21? Why or why not?

Maine should watch Colorado and Washington and use the lessons learned by those states to inform state policy. If Maine legalizes marijuana, it should only be after thorough research and a thoughtful debate process that ensures proper regulation, and that resulting state revenues are efficiently used to benefit Maine taxpayers.

I support investment in the development of renewable forms of energy. The state should work to move away from oil-based sources of energy over time. We need a diverse portfolio of energy resources that includes large generators of power, as well as smaller renewable sources of energy.

I support raising Maine’s minimum wage. Too many Mainers are struggling to support their families with jobs that don’t pay a livable wage for a hard day’s work.

What issue is the most important to voters in your legislative district?

Maine’s economy and creating good-paying jobs that enable people to make ends meet and care for their families. Maine ranks 43rd in the nation in job creation since 2011, and we recently learned that the income gap in the city of Lewiston is among the worst in the nation.

What about you makes you the man or woman for the job?

I will fight tirelessly for Lewiston, just like I did for our country. I’ve worked on both sides of the aisle as a legislative aide in the U.S. Senate and the Maine State House, and that’s what I’ll do in Augusta to get the job done for Lewiston.
