Second-grade teacher Violet Smith and her students load food they collected into a car at Longley Elementary School in Lewiston on Wednesday. Students held a food and penny drive to help students and friends who have been affected by the series of fires in downtown Lewiston. Students collected pennies and handed Joleen Bedard, executive director of the United Way of Androscoggin County, a check for $100. The food was picked up by Joel Furrow, director of The Root Cellar, a youth-oriented Christian mission in downtown Lewiston. “We need more kids like you,” Furrow told the class.
