NAPLES — Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a man who took a woman’s purse from her outside The Umbrella Factory Supermarket on Route 302 on Tuesday.

According to a news release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, a 41-year-old Harrison woman was taking her groceries to her car when she was robbed at about 3:15 p.m.

A man described as Caucasian, around 30 years old and between 5 feet, 9 inches and 6 feet tall reached into the woman’s basket and grabbed her purse. The woman grabbed the man’s arm to get her purse and the man freed himself by pulling off his sweatshirt. He ran in the direction of Bray’s Brew Pub with the purse, which contained typical identification cards and credit cards, police said.

The woman received minor injuries to her side and back during the struggle, police said.

The suspect may have fled in a full-sized, red Chevrolet or GMC regular cab pickup. The truck had a wooden ladder rack fixed to the bed, the release said.

The man’s cap and sweatshirt were recovered by police.

Later in the day, the woman’s bank card was used to make a purchase at the Rite Aid store on Portland Road in Bridgton.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department’s Detective Division at 774-1444, ext. 2108
