JAY/LIVERMORE FALLS — Representatives of Jay and Livermore Falls water districts say they have no connection to a Connecticut company that has distributed letters to customers in the area about water line insurance.
People have been contacting town offices and the Jay Village, North Jay and Livermore Falls water districts about the insurance, representatives of those entities said. Some people have even tried to pay for the insurance at town offices.
The towns also have nothing to do with the insurance, Jay Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.
The notice from HomeServe USA Repair Management Corp. tells people that they may not be aware that they are responsible for the water service line on their property. It says the water company is responsible for installing and continuing to maintain the water main in the street. It also states that the customer’s water service line is the customer’s responsibility from their property line to their foundation.
The company claims to sell insurance plans to eligible homeowners for unexpected repairs. There are several housing units that don’t apply, including properties for commercial use and multi-unit dwellings. The company’s plan proposes it would cover certain costs associated with damage caused by wear and tear, but not damage caused by an accident or negligence.
“Customers rarely have a problem in the area that would be covered” in the insurance that is being advertised, said Ronald Moreau, treasurer of the North Jay and Jay Village water districts, said.
It is the customer’s responsibility to check out the details of the insurance proposal, because the water district does not have any relationship with the insurance company, he said.
Local officials recommend that consumers review the water service line coverage details to be sure they understand the conditions under which the service plan applies. They also advise consumers to contact their insurance companies to determine if they need water line insurance, and to do some research on the company before they commit to buying the insurance.
