JAY — Events happening at Spruce Mountain High School this week include the following.
College visits
A representative from the University of New England will be at SMHS at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, to meet with interested seniors.
Senior parent night
The Guidance Office will host a senior parent night at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the library. Parents and seniors are invited. Topics include how to apply to college, senior interview, financial aid and scholarships.
Parent-teacher conferences
SMHS will hold parent-teacher conferences on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and on Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. Progress reports will be mailed home beforehand. Call 897-4336 to make appointments.
Civil War Book Talk
Through a generous grant from the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Historical Society, SMHS has been able to partner with the Norlands and assist students in doing the work of the historian.
The first book talk is scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15.
Michael Shaara’s “The Killer Angels” will be discussed by retired UMF professor Elizabeth Cooke, a descendant of Union General George Meade. The meeting will be at the Norlands in the farmer’s cottage. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome.

Saturday, Oct. 18: Cross-country at Cony High School.
