The Maine Sports Legends will honor 10 athletes as inductees into its “Hall of Honors” on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Alfond Youth Center in Waterville.

Chosen from Northern Maine are Phil Caverhill, Larry Murphy and Jim Carter; Eastern Maine: Allen Holmes and James C. Murphy; Central Maine: Marshall “Duke” Dulac, John Huard and Sam Shapiro; Southern Maine: Rocco Frenzilli and Nundi Romano.

These athletes are being recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to you and sports in Maine. The willingness to participate in this event will assist the Maine Sports Legends in its efforts to provide scholarship funds for outstanding scholar athletes. Eight scholar athletes, one male and female from each of the four regions, will receive awards. The recipients are this year’s banquet are:

Nicholas Lajoie, Van Buren District Secondary School; Clara Collins, Caribou High School; Samuel Lyons and Brianna Cirone, Jonesport/Beals High School; Andrew James Stanley, Sacopee Valley High; Miranda Nicely, Mt. Blue High School; Ryan Keefe, Kennebunk High School and Alexandra Logan, Cheverus High School.

The banquet will begin at 12:30 p.m. followed by a social half hour, which begins at noon. Tickets, at tables of eight, are $40 each. Tickets can be obtained by calling Maine Sports Legends at 622-1539 or by email to PaulMcClay@MSN.com.

Out of a class of 166 at Mt. Blue, Nicely graduated third with a 97 academic average. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Phi Beat Kappa and among the top 10 for the Princeton Book Award in Maine. Her activities in high school included Youth Expeditions to Ignite (YETI), a year on the prom committee and a year on the prom fashion show committee. Now attending the University of Southern Maine, she was a member and team captain of the high school soccer, basketball and track and field teams. She played AAU basketball for three years. Her community service included two years of recreation soccer and basketball coach and four years as a coach at basketball camp. She first attended a basketball camp as a sixth grader, participating for the entire summer. She was also a volunteer at flu clinics and worked in the summer as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
