BUCKFIELD — The Board of Selectmen voted Tuesday night to set the tax rate at $20.55 per thousand dollars of valuation for 2015.

The rate is down 75 cents from 2014.

The board also heard from Town Manager Cindy Dunn, who said the framers for the fire and rescue station failed to show up as scheduled this week. She contacted H.E. Callahan Construction of Auburn, the general contractor for the project, who learned the framers decided not to do the work but did not notify the town.

Callahan has hired another company to do the work, she said.

Last year, voters approved spending up to $1 million for a new station next to the Municipal Building on Route 117. Construction began this summer to replace the 60-year-old building on the lot.

In other business, Dunn said she could not confirm that various town policies she found on the town computer are actually enacted. The board voted to have her get all of them together for review and enactment, if necessary.

The board voted to form a hiring committee for a rescue/fire chief. The panel will include the acting rescue chief, the fire chief, Dunn and a selectman. Selectman Cheryl Coffman volunteered to be on the committee.

The board voted to advertise for a rescue/fire chief.

Richard Clark was appointed to the Road Committee for two years and Penny Horsfall was appointed to the Budget Committee for three years.

The board voted to advertise the sale of surplus equipment from Public Works and the Fire Rescue station. The proceeds would go to those accounts.

Selectmen also approved the use of Bessey Field for a haunted hayride fundraiser Oct. 24 and 25 by Buckfield Junior-Senior High School seniors.

The board approved the audit but will revisit the library section. The auditor thinks the money it generates should be under the town budget because the library’s board of trustees is not recognized as an organization.

In a discussion over the history of road width, resident Judy Berg said a handwritten book of minutes which has information on roads should be preserved.

Dunn said it was in the safe and there is a copy that can be used for research.

Board of Selectmen Chairwoman Martha Catevenis said the issue needs to be researched because road widths vary and sometimes ditching takes private property.
