Spruce Mountain announces week’s events

JAY — The following things are taking place this week at Spruce Mountain High School.

College visits

Representative from the following colleges or branches of the military will be at SMHS to meet with any interested seniors. Tuesday, Oct. 7, University of Maine at Orono and University of Maine at Farmington; Wednesday, Oct. 8, University of Southern Maine, Northern Maine Community College and the Marines; Thursday, Oct. 9, The Navy and University of Maine at Presque Isle.

KFC dinner

The SMHS field hockey team is hosting a KFC fundraising dinner from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7. Pre-ordered tickets can be purchased from a field hockey player.

Project graduation

There will be a parent meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the SMHS library for anyone interested in planning project graduation.

Food drive broadcast

As part of the School Spirit Challenge & Food Drive, WGME will be broadcasting at SMHS at 5:45 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. The entire student body, staff, RSU 73 School District, area towns and area businesses have been involved in this great challenge. Students will continue collecting food and money until Oct. 31. All money donations and food donations will be given to the Good Shepherd Food-Bank.

No school

A teacher workshop day will be held Friday, Oct. 10. There will be no school for students in RSU73. There is also no school on Monday, Oct. 13, in recognition of Columbus Day.

Conferences

SMHS will hold parent-teacher conferences on from 3 to 5 and 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, and from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. Progress reports will be mailed home beforehand. Call the high school office at 897-4336 to make appointments.

Civil War Book Talk

Through a generous grant from the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Historical Society, SMHS has been able to partner with the Norlands and assist students in doing the work of the historian. As part of the grant they will host a series of evening community book talks where they will read various works about the Civil War and be led in an evening talk by a “Scholar.”

The first book talk is scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. Students will be led in this talk about Michael Shaara’s “The Killer Angels” by retired UMF professor Elizabeth Cooke, a descendant of Union General George Meade. The meeting will be at the Norlands in the farmer’s cottage. Refreshments will be served. All students who are part of this class will be present. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Tuesday, Oct. 7: V/JV field hockey at Lincoln, 3:30V/5JV; V/JV girls soccer, home vs. Nokomis, 3:30V/5JV; V/JV boys soccer at Nokomis, 3:30V/5JV.

Thursday, Oct. 9: V/JV field hockey, home vs. Leavitt, 3:30V/5JV.

Friday, Oct. 10: Varsity football at Gray/New Gloucester, 7 p.m.; cross country at Mt. Blue, 4 p.m.; V/JV girls soccer at Waterville, 3:30V/5JV; varsity boys soccer, home vs. Waterville, 3:30.
