PORTLAND — Conductor Robert Moody will lead the Portland Symphony Orchestra and guest pianist Conrad Tao in a concert featuring music from Higdon, Grieg, and Shostakovich. The Sunday Classical concert will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at Merrill Auditorium.

The concert opens with Higdon’s Fanfare Ritmico before Tao takes the stage to perform Grieg’s Piano Concerto; Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12 is the final work.

Fanfare Ritmico gives the PSO the unique opportunity to perform a piece from a contemporary female composer who has received both a Pulitzer Prize and Grammy for her works. While composing the piece on the eve of the new millennium, Higdon found herself reflecting on how life, in general, has quickened in recent years. This fanfare celebrates the rhythmic patterns and ever-present energy of everyday life that is relatable for all modern listeners.

Current artist-in-residence with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Conrad Tao has enjoyed a formidable career in music that has already taken him around the world as a pianist and composer at the young age of 20. He has performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, Swedish Radio Symphony, and Bern Symphony in Switzerland, among others.
