HANOVER — The Gardner Roberts Memorial Library will host its sixth annual Celebration of Fall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, with live music, crafts and food.
Proceeds will go toward maintaining the library, a one-room building constructed in 1895. It’s beside the Hanover Town Office and is open four days a week.
“Hanover is a pretty small town,” library trustee Maria Holloway said. “There’s about 240 people or so in the town and, ever since Gordie Howe’s closed, the Gardner Roberts Memorial Library has become the hub of Hanover. It’s a nice gathering place for people to go and talk to their neighbors.
“The Celebration of Fall event is just an excuse for all of us to gather with friends, eat some food and catch up,” Holloway said. “It’s a public event, so anyone is welcome to attend.”
There will be a book sale, a yard sale, a craft corner, a snack bar, live music by resident Lisa Ferguson and a theme basket raffle.
“The baskets that we’re raffling off have a $200 value, in terms of what’s inside of the basket,” Holloway said. “Everyone’s done an amazing job setting up for this.”
The raffle drawing will take place at 2 p.m., along with a raffle drawing for a handmade quilt.
Volunteers are also offering tours of the library, Holloway said.
Holloway said the celebration will take place under the new Hanover Picnic Pavilion between the Town Office and the library. The pavilion was recently dedicated.
“One of our residents (Keith Crockett-Harrington) came up with the idea to construct that pavilion as part of his Eagle Scout project,” Holloway said. “The library acted as a fiscal agent for the scout. Even though we don’t own the pavilion, we supported the project and helped provide some funds so he could build it.”
In its 119 years, the library has had a name change, a location change and refurbishing efforts. One project Holloway said the library is hoping to accomplish when the funds are available is insulating the building.
“Our goal is to be open year-round, but it’s hard for us to do that because of how cold it gets in the building,” she said. “For awhile, we didn’t have heat in the building, but we received a grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation that allowed us to buy a propane stove, which heats up the building. Our goal is to find a way to not waste so much heat.”
Raffle tickets are available at the library, the Town Office, from any library trustee and by calling 603-553-1973, or senting an email to HanoverMENews@gmail.com.
