CHESTER —- Police shot and killed a man in his mid-30s about 6 p.m. Saturday off Route 116 in Chester at the end of an eight-hour standoff, according to the Maine State Police.
The names of the dead man and the troopers involved are expected to be released Sunday.
The man had held police at bay since midmorning when residents reported he was walking along the road with a knife, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state police.
At one point, the man cut a game warden with the knife. The injury was not serious, McCausland said.
State police negotiators responded and attempted to talk to the man. Members of the tactical team also were called to the scene, according to a press release McCausland issued Saturday night.
The incident began when deputies with the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 10:09 a.m. report of a man with a knife walking down Route 116 and acting erratically, Sheriff Glenn Ross said Saturday afternoon.
As is standard procedure following a police involved shooting, the Maine attorney general’s office will investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, McCausland said.
