POLAND — The Leavitt Hornets might have used up all their frequent flyer miles for the season.

Leavitt’s passes dotted the sky as the Hornets engineered a withering air campaign that gave them a lopsided 58-6 victory over the Poland Knights on unseasonably warm Friday night.

Poland’s secondary just couldn’t counter Leavitt’s devastating passing game. The Hornets reeled off 17 passes and completed nine for a whopping 331 yards. Quarterback Levi Craig had no problem hooking up with his receivers for three touchdown passes, and for good measure, he scored on a keeper.

“All season, we have thrown the ball a lot,” Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway said. “We feel like it is a strength of ours. Right now our receivers and quarterbacks are on the same page and the line is doing a good job of protecting them.

“It is a spread offense. We want to spread it around. Levi did a good job using all his receivers tonight.”

The Hornets certainly spread the wealth in the first half. Leavitt made it look easy when it constructed a 34-6 lead with just a little over five minutes left in the first quarter.

Leavitt tailback Julian Kirouac scored on a 1-yard rush for the first touchdown of the game. Minutes later, Craig rolled back and hit Maxwell Green for an 84-yard TD pass. The Knights fumbled on the third play of the next possession and Leavitt got the ball back on the 48.

Craig didn’t waste anytime and went to the air again, connecting with Gabe Seeley for 45-yard pass, placing the Hornets at 3-yard line. Captain Billy Bedard took the handoff and scored from there. Craig went 3-for-3 on the conversions, and Leavitt was well on its way with a 24-0 lead with 6:57 left in the first quarter.

Poland made some adjustments to Leavitt’s indomitable offense, allowing Robbie Porter to score on an 11-yard rush.

“Obviously we had a hard time matching up in the secondary,” Poland coach Ted Tibbetts said. “We knew that would be a concern. They are a good team. We had a hard time matching up.

“I have to do a better job coaching those younger kids more and getting those guys ready to step in, so that is part of the game.”

The Hornets didn’t take a respite after a productive first quarter. Leavitt punched in three more touchdowns, with Green scoring his second touchdown on a 21-yard pass from Craig. Mitchel Davis scored on a reception and Craig found the end zone on a 6-yard keeper.

In the second half, both teams kept the ball on the ground for the most part after they sent in their reserves.
