CANTON — Selectmen were advised Thursday night to enforce shoreland zoning rules to protect the health of Lake Anasagunticook.

Tom Hamilton of the Lake Anasagunticook Association presented the board with an overview of the lake’s health and said it is generally OK.

He showed Secchi readings, which measure water clarity, for May to September from 1999 to 2013. The highest reading was in June 1996 at 7.6 meters and the lowest was in May 2010 at 3.4 meters. The average for those years was 4.6 meters. The higher the number, the greater the clarity of the water.

Hamilton said it’s in the town’s best interest to guard the water quality as much as possible. Some ways to do that are keeping new construction and tree harvesting away from the shoreline and keeping soil and other matter from entering the lake.

In other news, the board tabled a inquiry by Animal Control Officer Rich Burton about carrying a concealed weapon. The question was prompted by a vicious dog attacking three people and Burton had to get the dog under control without a weapon.

Administrative Assistant Scotty Kilbreth will check on how granting the request would affect the town’s liability.

The board sold a lot on Route 108 to Bill Gray for $5200, after a sale fell through.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Donald Hutchins reported Gammon’s Mums at Route 140 and Pinewoods Road has opened for business.

The board voted to clear the tax rolls of small amounts owed on a long list of properties, because of the expense of collecting them. Many date back to the 1900s.

Hutchins read a letter from Bill Gray granting the town permission to use a piece of his property for plow turnaround. Gray said he thought the town should have something on record.
