Charged with murder, Evaristo Deus was back in Maine on Thursday night to face allegations he ran down and killed his girlfriend Tuesday in Lewiston.

State and Lewiston police drove the 33-year-old suspect from New York, arriving at the Androscoggin County Jail at about 6 p.m., according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Deus is scheduled to appear in Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn at 9 a.m. Friday, McCausland said.

Deus was arrested at JFK Airport on Wednesday morning as he was about to leave for Haiti, police said.

Deus waived extradition to Maine after he was arrested on a murder warrant, officials said. An interpreter was on hand in court to translate from English to French, Deus’ native language.

In a complaint, Deus was charged in the murder of Laudrinha Kubeloso, 32, of 78 College St. in Lewiston. She died Tuesday night after she was struck from behind by a vehicle at Birch and Howe streets in Lewiston as she was walking. Police said she was four months pregnant.

The Angola woman had been a volunteer at Hope House on College Street in Lewiston and had been enrolled in adult education classes.

Deus had been living in Lewiston for less than a year, most recently on Union Street.

Deus’ blue 2001 Suzuki SUV was found Wednesday morning in Portland, police said. A University of New England security guard found the vehicle about midmorning in the parking lot of the UNE campus on Stevens Avenue.
