Maine Gladiators

The Lewiston/Auburn area has a rich tradition of producing outstanding hockey players and the recent merger of the Twin City Titans and Gladiator’s to become the Maine Gladiators.

The is a non-for profit organization is run by volunteers. The Maine Gladiators home ice is at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.

Maine Gladiators were awarded a state grant from the Maine Amateur Hockey Association to grow the game of hockey. This grant, combined with the Dunkin Donuts Partnership, will allow the Maine Gladiators to expand their Learn to Skate and Try Hockey for Free programs.

The Maine Gladiators offers teams in Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 divisions, for both  started practices. The Tier 4 program formerly called, House, is ready to start in October. The Maine Gladiators will offer Learn to Skate, Minimites, Mites, Squirts, Peewees, Bantams and Midget programs, which includes participants from ages 4 through 18.

Tier 4 (house) registration is now open for the Dunkin Munchkins Learn to Skate program (formerly Atoms).  Register now.

This program is for beginning skaters for ages 4 and up who have not played before. Each session will be 6 weeks long. The start date is Oct. 5.

Cost for Tier 4 Teams is as follows:

Squirts, Peewee, Bantams: $700 if paid before Oct. 1; $770 after that date

Mites: $540 if paid before Oct. 1; $600 after

Minimites: $410 if paid before Oct. 1, $455 after

Girls team: to be announced depending on registrations

IAABO basketball referee clinics offered

The International Association of Approved Basketball Officials IABBO 21 will be holding rules instruction for prospective officials. Candidates must be 18 years of age to take the test and work in the 2012-2013 season. If you have played the game, and still enjoy being involved, and would like to make extra money, this might be a good outlet for you. The first class will be held Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6:00  p.m. at Edward Little High School.

Basktball training sessions

Lewiston boys’ basketball coach Tim Farrar will be holding  training sessions for girls and boys in grades 5 through 8 at the Lewiston High School gym Wednesdays from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m., beginning Oct. 1 and running through Oct. 29.

Each training session will focus on improving footwork, ball handling and shooting. This is a great way for players to  prepare for the upcoming season. Cost is $10 per session. Contact Farrar at 890-2898 or at tfarrar@lewistonpublicschools.org.

Breaking for Breast Cancer Awareness

On October 4, Sosai Donna Harris of Phoenix Academy of Martial Arts in Auburn will attempt to set an official Guinness World Record for the most number of pine boards broken by hand in one minute to raise money for Project Pink and kick off the YWCA’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.

There will be carnival games, food, prizes and live entertainment in addition to the Guinness Attempt. Entrance is free, although donations are welcome. All proceeds from the event will benefit the non-profit organization Project Pink in memory of Ann Murray Paige.

Activities begin at 10 a.m. at the YWCA of Central Maine 150 East Avenue Lewiston. The Guinness World Record attempt  will be at 1 p.m.
